Before the formation of Toto the group, members worked as session work for other musicians. The group's collaboration led to the formation of Toto in 1976.

In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by re-discovering old tapes and demos to release a special edition called Toto XX. The album was well-loved by fans and Toto began an extensive tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
Shem Von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as drummer during the tour in support of the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included live recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.

Drummer David Hungate also left the band after the tour. He was replaced by bassist Leland Sklar.

The album, released on November 6, 2018, featured three new tracks from their forthcoming album 40 Trips Around the Sun as well as completed recordings of four previously released tracks featuring Jeff Porcaro playing drums and Mike or Steve Porcaro playing bass. The album included a cover version of Weezer’s song “Hash Pipe” which the band added after hearing it on the radio.
